If you’re planning ahead as a substitute teacher (or just trying to predict when assignments may slow down), Hawaii is refreshingly straightforward: Hawaii’s public schools largely follow one statewide calendar.
When is spring break for Hawaii public schools 2026?
Hawaii public schools (HIDOE) have Spring Break from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 20, 2026.
If you think in “real life weeks,” that usually feels like March 14–22, 2026 when you include the weekends before and after.
Does every school in Hawaii follow the same spring break?
Almost all HIDOE public schools do, but there are important exceptions:
HIDOE’s statewide calendars apply to all public schools except Holomua Elementary (multi-track) and charter schools, which may follow different calendars.
Private schools can differ substantially. For example, Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi lists a two-week spring break (Mar 16–27, 2026) on its 2025–26 calendar.
What spring break means for substitute teachers
Spring break is typically a low-demand window for day-to-day coverage because most campuses are closed to students. The practical move is to plan around it:
Week before break: more planned absences, travel days, and “I’m out early” coverage requests
During break: fewer postings (often near-zero for typical daily coverage)
Week after break: a bounce-back period as routines restart
Quick date disclaimer:
Spring break dates can change, and some schools (especially charter, private, and multi-track campuses) may follow a different calendar than the main public school system. Always confirm the latest dates directly on your school’s official calendar before making plans.
