Substitute Teacher Requirements
Georgia has clear statewide guidelines for substitute teachers.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED
At least 18 years old
Criminal background check and fingerprinting through GCIC and FBI
Mandatory Training
Georgia requires 4 hours of substitute teacher training, covering:
Classroom management
Student safety
Child abuse reporting
This training requirement is waived for certified teachers.
Assignment Limits in Georgia
Georgia places limits on how long substitutes can remain in the same classroom:
With a high school diploma or GED:
Limited to 10 consecutive days in one classroom
With a bachelor’s degree:
Limited to 45 consecutive days in one classroom
After 46+ consecutive days, the role must be filled by a certified teacher.
If you’re pursuing longer assignments, earning a degree significantly expands your opportunities.
